Service between New York and Chicago by way of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh began in 1902 as the Pennsylvania Special. In 1912 it became the journey of the Broadway Limited. Except for two periods in 1903 and 1904, during World War I and occasional disruptions by flooding, the Broadway Limited ran east and west daily. It had its last run in 1995, for an era that lasted through the Depression, two world wars, the Sputnik, atom bomb and the Internet age.
